Before the modern clock

Early timed games used separate clocks or sandglasses. An official or the players had to manage the switch. Each method followed one main rule: only the player whose turn it is should lose time.

The mechanical flag

A paired clock put two timers in one case. Pressing one button stopped one timer and started the other. A small flag sat near the top of each dial. When it fell, the player's time had run out. Chess players still call this a flag fall.

Digital and browser clocks

Digital clocks made added time, delay and more than one time stage easy to set. Browser clocks are easy to carry and can use large screens. Physical tournament clocks are often stronger, easier to press by touch and accepted by the event.

Mechanical clocks also exposed their limitations clearly: low-time precision was hard to read, staged controls required manual intervention, and the movement needed maintenance. What digital and browser clocks added

Electronic clocks made per-move increment, delay, move counters, and multi-stage schedules easier to automate. Browser timers extended availability by using a screen already at hand and can offer large digits, keyboard controls, local history, and accessible status messages. They also introduced new dependencies: operating-system interruptions, browser behavior, battery state, touch accuracy, and event policies about phones. Did digital clocks replace mechanical clocks completely?
